Have you ever spent an entire day working on your business and wondered:
“Did anything I did today actually lead to clients?”
If that’s ever happened to you, you’re definitely not alone.
It’s something I had to figure out for myself, too.
As a mom of two adult children with special needs, I’ve never had the luxury of unlimited time in my business. Even now, our weeks can include multiple doctor appointments, therapies, and the day-to-day realities that come with supporting children who have special challenges.
On top of that, I prioritize my own health. I live with adult-onset muscular dystrophy, so physical therapy and consistent exercise are part of my life, too.
Early on, I realized that I couldn’t afford to spend time on things that didn’t move my business forward.
I had to get really clear on which activities actually lead to clients.
Why Traditional Business Advice Doesn’t Always Work for Special Needs Moms
At one point, I realized that a lot of the advice I was hearing just didn’t fit my life.
I didn’t have the capacity to work 10 or 12-hour days, post on every platform or maintain a perfectly curated feed…
That’s just not my reality.
And if you’re a mom raising a child (or adult) with special needs, it’s probably not yours either.
You might be juggling appointments, therapies, caregiving, family responsibilities and possibly a business or career.
Your time is precious – which means how you use that time matters even more.
Personally, I’m not willing to build a business at the expense of my family, my health, or the other life zones that matter most.
So I had to learn how to focus on the few activities that actually move the needle.
The Real Problem: Being Busy but Not Getting Clients
One of the biggest challenges I see with coaches and entrepreneurs is this:
They’re busy all day… but not getting clients.
Maybe you feel like you’re doing everything you’re “supposed” to do like working on your website, learning new strategies, or trying to create the perfect post…
But still not seeing consistent clients.
It can be incredibly frustrating to be putting in the effort but not seeing results.
In my experience with my clients, it’s usually not because you’re not working hard enough –
It’s because your time is going toward activities that don’t actually create clients.
One of my clients said it best:
“Before working with Natalie, I was busy for the sake of being busy. With Natalie’s guidance, I shifted from low-value busywork to high-impact, money-making activities.”
That shift changed everything for her.
I recommend that you evaluate where you’re spending your time and whether the activities you’re spending your time on are leading to clients.
Visibility Alone Doesn’t Create Clients
A lot of entrepreneurs are focused on being visible but are simply not having enough conversations.
Don’t get me wrong – visibility matters – and it’s important to have a consistent social media presence – but visibility alone doesn’t create clients.
Conversations create clients.
Your content should invite connection and conversation.
A Simple Way to Create More Conversations
One simple strategy is to intentionally build engagement into your content.
Here are a few examples of how you could easily do that:
- Add a few engagement questions into your trainings
- Share about a personal experience and ask a question at the end
- Post a simple question to start the week
Sometimes I’ll post a simple question using a Facebook background—and it takes just minutes.
When you focus on creating conversations, the algorithm will reward you with greater reach.
After all, social media is meant to be social, not a lecture.
The Activities That Actually Bring Clients
The shift from being busy…
to building a business that actually brings in clients comes down to this:
Focusing on high-impact, money-making activities:
- connecting with people
- sharing your unique value
- making invitations to help
You need clear messaging that speaks directly to your ideal clients.
You need to consistently connect and have real conversations.
Because at the end of the day—
conversations are what lead to clients.
When these pieces come together, your business starts to grow in a way that feels sustainable.
